I know not what of pain or grief
The future has in store
What seas and rivers I must cross,
To gain the heavenly shore.
And yet I go serenely on,
I do not feel afraid,
For God will give, as He has given,
His comfort and His aid.
I know not why He leads my feet
So oft o’er stony ways,
I only know that He in love
Doth portion out my days.
If some be shadowed o’er with pain,
Some dark ‘neath sorrow’s pall,
I know, at last, it shall be well,
And praise Him for them all.
I know not how my Lord will come,
Nor when he will appear.
Will that great hour be long delayed?
Or is it almost here?
But when or how, it matters not,
For this I surely know,
That He shall so return from heaven
As they beheld Him go.
